用短語表示否定含義的試題也經常出現。常見的短語有：
out of the question 完全不可能，辦不到
not in the least 一點也不，與not at all 同義。
Notuntil 直到才
no morethan(或notany more than) 和一樣地不
neithernor 既不也不
cant help but 不禁
wontunless 除非不會
在聽到這些短語時，一是要注意它對否定對象的否定程度，是對兩者都否定，還是否定一部分。另外要注意相似短語之間的區別，有時一點微小的差別會產生截然相反的含義。

M: Can you possibly lend me $ 10?
W: Its out of the question.
Q: What do you learn about the woman?
只要理解短語out of the question為不可能的否定含義，就很容易找出正確答案。這里需要注意的是與短語out of question的區別，后者是毫無疑問的肯定含義。漏聽了冠詞the就會得出相反的結論。

Neither I nor he knows anything about it.
(他和我都不知道這件事。)注意短語Neithernor與eitheror的區別，前者是兩者都否定，后者是兩者擇一。
【例18】
One does not know the value of health until he loses it.
(失去健康的人才覺得健康可貴。)notuntil為半否定短語，否定句子的前半句。

Jack is no more diligent (not diligent any more) than John.
