今天我們來讀其中的一篇，The Hikers（徒步旅行者）。
Two friends were hiking when they encountered（遇到） a bear. Frightened（受驚的） and thinking only of himself, one of the hikers climbed a tree. With no time to hide（藏）, the other hiker threw himself on the ground and pretended（假裝） to be dead. The bear approached（靠近） and sniffed（嗅） around his head. The man remained（保持） calm, holding his breath until the bear walked away.
With the bear out of sight, the hiker in the tree came down. He asked his friend if the bear had said anything, since the bear had put its mouth to his friends ear. As a matter of fact, the hiker who had been on the ground replied, it told me not to trust people who abandon（拋棄） their friends in difficult times.
Moral（寓意）: Adversity（逆境） tests the sincerity（真誠） of friends.
「讀書筆記」
hike意思是徒步旅行,遠足，現在是個踏青的好時節，就可以說：Its a good season for hiking.后面加上r，變成hiker，就是指遠足旅行的人，題目tow hikers意思就是兩個徒步旅行者的故事。
兩個朋友在徒步旅行時遇到了一只熊。（Two friends were hiking when they encountered a bear.）由于受到驚嚇（Frightened）和人類天生的自私心理（thinking only of himself），一個人爬上了樹。（one of the hikers climbed a tree.）
with是介詞，這里引導原因狀語從句，意思是由于、因為，如：They were wild with joy.（他們欣喜若狂。）由于沒時間躲藏（With no time to hide），另一個人就躺到在地上（threw himself on the ground，threw是through的過去式）裝死（pretended to be dead）。Pretend是假裝的意思，通常有兩種句式：
pretend + that從句，如：He pretended that he was innocent. 他假裝無辜。
Pretend + to be + adj.，如：He pretended to be friendly with me. 他假裝對我友善。
熊走近他，在他的腦袋四周嗅來嗅去。這名男子保持鎮靜（remained calm），屏住呼吸（holding his breath）直到熊走遠。（這個方法雖然危險，可是很靈驗，因為熊向來很自負，從來不吃死了的食物。）
叫別人別太激動，平靜下來，我們常說Calm down, please.
Hold ones breath意思是屏息而待，如：All Europe held its breath to see who would win the election. 全歐洲屏息而待,看誰能贏得這場選舉。
在熊遠離視線后（With the bear out of sight），樹上的人爬了下來。（in the tree修飾the hiker）他問他的朋友，熊是不是對他說了些什么（if the bear had said anything因為這個動作應發生在ask之前，而ask是過去時，所以，過去的過去發生的動作，就要用過去完城時），因為熊把嘴貼近了他朋友的耳朵。（since the bear had put its mouth to his friends ear.）
事實上（As a matter of fact），那個躺在地上的人說，（who had been on the ground修飾the hiker）它告訴我，別相信那些在朋友有難時拋棄他們的人。（who abandon their friends in difficult times修飾people）

當others前面加上了定冠詞the變成了the others，就表示特指某范圍內的其他的人或物。如：
A few of those in white are doctors , the others are nurses .

We got home by 5 oclock , but the others didnt get back until 7 oclock .
我們5點就到家了，可其他人直到7點才回來。
