Born Sofia Scicolone, on Sept. 20, 1934, in Rome. An illegitimate（非法的、私生的） child of Romilda Villani and Riccardo Scicolone, she grew up in dire poverty（貧窮）, in the slums（貧民窟） of Pozzuoli. Her mother, a frustrated（失意的） actress, instilled starring（當明星） aspirations（熱望、志向） in the skinny little Sofia.
后來，她終于用參加選美的方式獲得了眾人的目光。
Sofia met producer and future husband Carlo Ponti while competing in a beauty contest（選美會）. Loren and Ponti, 24 years her senior, were married in 1957, following his Mexican divorce from his estranged wife（已分居但尚未離婚之妻）. Unfortunately the Italian law did not recognize the divorce（離婚） and charged（控告） them with bigamy（重婚罪）.
直到1966年，這對有情人才在法國獲得了合法的婚姻。

dire：可怕的、悲慘的，常常用來指災難、悲苦等，比如a dire calamity可怕的災難；dire warnings可怖的預兆；dire news噩耗。與它的同義詞比較，terrible在程度上沒有dire強烈，而dreadful和horrible更強調恐怖的、討厭的事情，比如：
a dreadful movie
極糟糕的影片
The food at the hotel was horrible.
旅館里的食物糟透了。

instill：原意是滴注，這里是逐漸灌輸的意思，常與in和into連用。例如
A good teacher can instill the desire to learn in young people.
好的教師能將求知欲逐漸灌輸給青年人。
Sofia在一次選美會上認識了她的制作人和后來的丈夫Carlo Ponti.（Sofia met producer and future husband Carlo Ponti while competing in a beauty contest）Ponti比她大24歲，（24 years her senior）在他和分居的墨西哥妻子離婚后，（following his Mexican divorce from his estranged wife）Loren和Ponti在1957年結了婚。（Loren and Ponti were married in 1957）不幸的是（Unfortunately）意大利的法律不允許離婚，（the Italian law did not recognize the divorce）因此他們被判定為重婚。（charged them with bigamy）
并不是所有的形容詞表示比較時都用than，英語中有幾個以-or結尾源于拉丁語的形容詞，由于其原級已具有比較的含義，在表示比較時不用than，而用to.本課的senior就屬于這類形容詞。
用senior來表達年長的意思，有兩種方法，
第一種，be senior to（年長于），例如：
Mary is two years senior to me, and her sister is junior to me by three years.
Mary比我大兩歲，她妹妹比我小3歲。
第二種，be two/five/ten etc years sbs senior比某人大2/5/10歲，例如：
原文中的24 years her senior意思就是，比她大24歲。

Her husband was nine years her senior.

bi -這個詞綴表示雙、兩個、一對的意思，比如biannual指每年兩次的;每半年的，biathlete指冬季兩項選手，bicoastal意思是兼在美國東西兩岸工作或居住的，不過大家最熟悉的恐怕還是bisexual兩性的。
而gamy是詞根婚姻、結婚的意思。那么多婚制就是polygamy，而一夫一妻制則應該是monogamy.
